Gun Country began operation in 1981, and quickly grew into a full-line shooting and hunting store. It soon outgrew its original location on South Street in Mt. Airy, and moved into its new facility on Hadley Street in the fall of 1989.
Run by Bob Poplin, Gun Country now carries a full line of rifles, shotguns, and handguns. It also stocks most major brands of ammunition as well as other shooting-related items such as cleaning supplies, optics, holsters, reloading supplies, game calls and various other shooting accessories. Bob is a license agent for North Carolina Wildlife, and makes available to you hunting and fishing licenses. Additionally, Gun Country has the area's only indoor handgun shooting range, offering six lanes of shooting for handgun practice. All standard calibers from .22 up to and including .44 Magnum and .45 Colt are permitted. Only rifle calibers and handgun calibers traveling over 2,000 feet per second are excluded.
Gun Country also offers North Carolina's mandatory orientation and training class, which is required to obtain a handgun concealed carry permit. The shop contains a classroom on-site, and classes can be scheduled in the evenings to accommodate the schedule requirements of applicants. Bob is an NRA-certified instructor and conducts these classes personally. Additionally, the range is available for evening charter by groups wishing to enjoy the facility after hours.

Also, its many satisfied customers are always willing to exchange information and share ideas with each other on every aspect of hunting and shooting.
For the convenience of its customers, Gun Country accepts most major credit cards, offers friendly lay-away service for large purchases, and can assist you with minor modifications and repairs. Bob mounts and bore-sights scopes that he sells to his customers at no charge, and gladly offers this services to others at a low fee.
